Abandoned properties

Unfortunately, some of our tenants just leave their properties without telling us.

It may be some time before we find out. This means that someone on our waiting list has to wait longer before they get a home, and it means that the property may attract vandalism or anti-social behaviour.

Please contact your local housing office if you spot an empty property, whether it’s one of ours or one that’s privately owned. The sooner we know about it, the sooner we can do something about it. You can tell us anonymously, but if you give us your details, we’ll be able to get back to you and let you know what’s happening.

When you tell us about a property that may have been abandoned, we’ll visit it and check who owns it. We’ll then arrange for it to be re-let if the tenant isn’t coming back.

If the property isn’t one of ours, we’ll refer it to the City Council who will investigate the situation. It can take a long time, often a few months, to try and trace the owner.

Once we know who owns the property, we’ll ask for their co-operation to bring it back into use and deal with any issues such as fly tipping, broken windows and overgrown hedges and lawns.
